More About This Great Neighborhood ~ Japantown
Where can you experience the culture and heart of the city all in one neighborhood in downtown San Jose? Japantown. One of only three Japantowns in the country, this unique ethnic neighborhood nestled between the Bayshore Freeway and Highway 87 surrounded by communities like Hyde Park, Luna Park, Northside, Hensley, and Ryland, Japantown is a small community made up of about 12 square blocks boosting multiple cafés, shops, restaurants, and cultural facilities scattered next to high-rise condominiums and townhouses. This is a convenient and self-sufficient place to live for those that simply want to stay within a smaller neighborhood or those that prefer to not own a car.
Japantown is a convenient location for young professionals who want to be close to downtown, less than a mile away, but are looking for a more unique living experience. This micro-economy makes the area particularly well-suited for entrepreneurs and startup companies. While small, Japantown hosts several festivals throughout the year and offers a year-round farmers market on Sundays.
Japantown Real Estate
The primary services and amenities are found on Jackson Street, which runs east and west through Japantown. From there, residential options are spread out and home prices are typically from $600,000 to $1.5 million. You'll find an eclectic range of styles and designs from unique townhomes with two-story layouts, garages, and private balcony or rooftop balconies to condominium buildings with single-story layouts, high-end appliances, upscale kitchens, and views of the area.
Several townhouses are actually standalone, most of which are within easy walking distance to Jackson Street, shops, and restaurants. Single-family homes are going to start at about $900,000 on up. Again, this is ideal for startups, young entrepreneurs, and professionals looking for an affordable housing option that's within walking distance to your favorite coffee shop, sushi restaurant, bistro, or farmers market.
Residence in this community are still part of the San Jose school district and are typically zoned for the Grant elementary school, the Peter Burnett middle school, and the San Jose high school. All of the schools are within about a mile of most homes and condos in Japantown.
