Welcome to the Portola Valley!
Welcome to the beautiful little town in San Mateo County called Portola Valley. Originally formed in 1964, this is considered the wealthiest town in America per the American Community Survey by the U.S. Census. Named for the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola who explored the San Francisco Peninsula area in 1769, Portola Valley was incorporated in 1964 after originally being named Portola-Crespi Valley for the local Crystal Springs now Crystal Springs reservoir. Nestled on the San Francisco Peninsula east of Santa Cruz Mountains and west of Interstate 280, Portola Valley is home to about 4600 residents and is considered one of the top places to live in San Mateo County.
Situated at the foot of the Western Hills, beautiful Portola Valley is just minutes to Palo Alto, Redwood City, Cupertino, Mountain View, and about 30 minutes or 27 miles from downtown San Jose. It includes about 1900 acres of permanent open space with over 30 miles of trails, minutes from the famous Stanford Shopping Center and the University, about 30 minutes from Google's headquarters, and about 35 minutes from San Francisco and the international airports. Portola Valley is known for its extensive trail network maintained by the town and the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. While it may be a modern town, parts look like it's been preserved from Western times with the historic Alpine Inn and several other historical buildings and places throughout the town.
Portola Valley Schools
Education is a top priority in Portola Valley. It has its own elementary school district with two primary schools, Ormondale school for grades kindergarten through third and Corte Madera school for grades 4-8. The public high school serving Portola Valley is the Woodside high school part of the Sequoia Union High School District in neighboring Woodside as well as to private schools, an independent college preparatory Roman Catholic day and boarding school, the Woodside Priory School, and independent pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade school called Woodland school.
"I can’t say enough good things about Corte Madera. My daughter is in 6th grade and is thriving there. The Portola Valley School District has a new superintendent as of two years ago and she’s dynamite. Corte Madera has a new (old) principal this year (she had been vice principal but got promoted) and she’s right of top of it all. CMS was recently named a California Distinguished School by the state. Most teachers are very good (every school has a few who aren’t stellar). The math program caters to three levels of proficiency and the accelerated class really challenges those who want it. The band teacher is charismatic and inspiring. The art teacher pushes the kids hard to explore all aspects of their creativity. There’s a maker lab for lunch and recess. And the school was among the first to return to in-person learning during the Covid pandemic. It’s a really, really good school." - GreatSchools.org
