Willow Glen was originally an unincorporated community of San Jose when it got its start back in the mid-1800s. By the 1860s, the small neighborhood started its own school and until 1920s, operated as an independent city. But, in the 1930s, the shortage of sewerage systems in Willow Glen became a problem and eventually opted to annex with San Jose and linked to their sewage system. However, it still gets its name from the marshy wet area between Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek, which has plenty of vegetation like willows and cattails.
